Top Five Saves - #5 Sunny's Second Chance
In October of 2019, with more than 1,632 animals already in its care, Pima Animal Care Center’s Animal Protection Officers saved 85 pets from a hoarding situation. 67 birds ranging from finches to a macaw and several chickens, and 18 small dogs were removed from a home where over 24 other animals were found deceased.
Shelter staff, volunteers, and fosters immediately got to work providing shelter, love, and medical care to each and every pet brought into the shelter that day. Many birds required offsite medical treatment as the PACC clinic’s focus is primarily dogs and cats. Thanks to your donations and the support of local avian rescues, Friends of PACC was able to get these birds the specialty vet care they needed.
Sunny was just one of the 67 birds saved from neglect. This beautiful cockatiel was taken into foster care with local D-S Rescue who then partnered with Friends of PACC to take care of his leg. A string had been tied rightly around his leg and left there, resulting in the death of his lower leg and foot.
To prevent further infection and make Sunny as comfortable as possible, his leg had to be amputated. Thanks to supporters like you, Friends of PACC was able to pay for his specialty surgery and D-S Rescue had his overgrown beak trimmed as well.
D-S Rescue says that Sunny is “full of personality, he is just too funny! We need to thank Friends of PACC for helping with his surgery, it is very appreciated.” D-S Rescue continues to work on socializing the other hoarding case birds in their care and has already found loving new homes for five of them.
