This AZ Gives Day, Invest in the Futures of Homeless Pets

Bacon is a sweet hound-dog mix who had a terrible infection of the uterus. If not treated right away, this infection could have cost Bacon her life.

Thankfully, Bacon found herself in the care of Pima Animal Care Center. Dr. Wayt was able to take her in for immediate surgery. Dr. Wayt is PACC’s fourth vet, and her position is funded by generous donations to Friends of PACC. Bacon’s infected uterus was removed, and she recovered under close watch in our ICU.

She wags her tail when you say her name, and a gentle pet usually gets you a kiss on the hand, too! Today, Bacon is in a loving home.

Bacon had symptoms that could have been from any number of issues. It was necessary to get her into surgery immediately, but sometimes the vets need more information before acting. In those cases, donations to Friends of PACC make it possible for pets in crisis to be seen by a specialty vet outside of the shelter. Specialty consultations, testing, and treatment can range anywhere from $1,500 to over $5,000 per pet at an outside clinic.

Your help is needed to save pets like Bacon.

Last year PACC took in over 18,400 of our community’s most vulnerable pets and saved over 91%. You will save lives when you donate to help purchase an ultrasound machine and training for the shelter’s clinical staff this AZ Gives Day. Any additional funds raised will meet other urgent shelter needs.

And every gift is matched by generous, anonymous donors, up to $13,000!

“Very frequently we have pets coming into PACC after severe trauma. With an ultrasound, we can safely look for internal bleeding, collapsed lungs, ruptured bladders. An ultrasound would guide us in treating those trauma cases, showing us where to fix collapsed lungs and informing us if surgical intervention is needed,” shared Dr. Wilcox, PACC’s Chief of Veterinary Services.

The current situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic has made it more important than ever that PACC vets are able to do as much as they can at the shelter. Owning this equipment will free up funding for other critical shelter needs and help save hundreds of lives.

Dozens of traumatically injured pets arrive at the PACC clinic every week.
Having an ultrasound machine at the shelter will aid in the diagnosis of damage to internal organs, make it possible to evaluate pregnant pets, aid in the placement of nerve blocks for surgery, and so much more. And pets who are truly suffering will not have to endure transport to and from an outside specialty vet.

Your gift will help pets in need get faster, more accurate diagnoses and treatments in addition to better pain management.
